Probiotics such as Bacillus subtilis have potential to reduce enteric disease in poultry and subsequent contamination of Aqua culture and poultry products. These are the micro-organisms that are fed to animals to colonize the intestinal environment and promote a better flora balance.

Action of Bacillus Subtilis:

Bacillus subtilis produces large variety of enzymes such as phytase, lipase amylase, protease, cellulase etc., which helps in degradation of feed. It also improves feed conversion ratio and egg shell quality in layers.
It promotes growth in animals.

Inhibition of pathogenic microflora:

Bacillus subtilis modifies the intestinal microflora by reducing several pathogenic bacteria found in intestine such as E.coli, Salmonella and also reported to reduce microbial pollution of broiler carcasses. It competes with harmful bacteria in digestive tract for epithelial attachment sites and nutrients thus reduces the growth of pathogens and establishes normal microbes in gut. This condition improves immune response, absorption function along with reduction of inflammatory responses and toxic amine synthesis.

For Aqua Culture:

With the ability of Bacillus Subtilis to produce a variety of enzymes in degrading waste and therefore used in a big way in aquaculture.

Spore count: 100 billion cfu/g

Probiotics are live microbial feed additions that improve animal health. Their activities are towards improving the composition of the gastrointestinal microbiota in a manner that reduces the risk of disorder. Bacillus coagulans also known as Lactobacillus sporogenes is a gram positive, aerobic bacteria which produces lactic acid

Actions of Bacillus coagulans

Bacillus coagulans is a spore forming bacteria. This property of spore formation is the main characteristic that makes it the probiotic of choice in clinical applications. It behaves in a totally different way than many commonly used probiotics due to spore formation.

Improves immune system in animals

Bacillus coagulans produces short-chain fatty acids such as butyric acid, a compound known to support the health and healing of cells in the small and large intestines and to contribute to modulation of the mucosal immune system.

Inhibition of Pathogenic bacteria

Spores of Bacillus coagulans are added to the animal feed. On oral administration, these spores survive the acidic gastric environment and are activated due to the low pH, mechanical churning action of the stomach and the water in the gastric environment. The spore coats imbibe water, swell, and the increased water content causes a rise in the metabolic rate of the sporulated bacilli. Outgrowths begin to protrude from the spore-coats. The spores pass on to the duodenum where the outgrown cells germinate and transform into viable vegetative cells. They begin to proliferate in the small intestine, multiplying rapidly. Usually, germination takes place about four hours after ingestion. A large supply of viable bacteria is thereby ensured in the small intestine. These cells settle in the intestinal tract and continue their metabolic activities, producing lactic acid and probably bacteriocins, which render the intestinal environment non-conducive for the growth of harmful pathogenic bacteria.

In aquaculture

Bacillus coagulans improves growth performance and digestive enzyme activity in some fishes and also found to improve productive performances.

Probiotic feed additives when added to the animal feed, can reach and colonize in the animal's digestive system, beneficially improving the properties of the indigenous flora with consistent improvement in growth and feed efficiency.

Effect in Poultry

Animal feed containing Bacillus licheniformis significantly increases body weight in chickens and also improves feed conversion ratio. It also results in increased protein and free amino acid contents and decreased fat content in chickens. Thus, it improves broiler productivity and meet quality in chicken.

Inhibition of Pathogens in animals

Bacillus licheniformis lowers incidence of post weaning diarrhoea due to E. coli infection. It also improves feed conversion ratio and carcass quality and body weight in animals.

It helps to restore bacterial balance and assist in digestion and assimilation. These Bacillus licheniformis colonise the gut and help prevent pathogens taking hold .The Bacillus licheniformis are used in the breakdown of the food into smaller, more readily absorbed nutrients. So pets will make more efficient use of the food fed

Effect in Aquaculture

Bacillus licheniformis possess vibriostatic effect against pathogenic vibrios found in certain types of fish. It also improves intestinal microflora and immune system in fishes
